Personal Statement
Stephen Maer (17 April 1933 - 7 January 2004) was an exceptional designer jeweller who will be remembered for both his talent and his commitment to the crafts. he designed and made wearable modern jewellery that aimed for understated elegance through clearly defined abstract sculptural forms. Some designs contrast matt 'frosted' surfaces with polished edges. Individual pieces were also designed and made to commission in 18ct gold.

In 1976 Stephen and a few like-minded jewellers formed the Designer Jewellers Group which aimed to introduce their work to a wider market. The Group is now well established and exhibits regularly at the Barbican Centre. In addition to trade fairs, Stephen exhibited many times at Goldsmiths' Hall as well as the Chelsea Crafts Fair, the Design Centre, and the Mall Galleries. At the time of his death he was the chairman of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. He was a part-time lecturer at the Central School of Art between 1968 and 1980 and had also been an advisor on various government bodies.

Stephen's work encouraging young designer-makers has led his family and friends to establish a memorial fund in his name that makes an annual award to a young designer-maker each year. All donations to the fund are welcome and cheques should be made out to The Society of Designer Craftsmen and sent with a covering note indicating that the payment is intended for the Stephen Maer Memorial Fund.
