Personal Statement
For the past eight years I have specialised in the design and manufacture of one-off pieces, limited editions and commissions in gold and silver and other metals. I work in silver, gold, steel and bronze using processes that include, raising,
forging,
casting,
chasing and engraving. The vessels or forms are usually hand raised from flat circles of silver. They are
planished by hand with various hammers over steel stakes to produce a final shape. My aim is to create an organic piece based upon strong formal structural elements. I design and make objects that are both usable and function well whilst retaining their tactile qualities. I prefer to work to a given brief whereby the decorative element of the piece may be based upon ideas drawn up with the client, however, on occasion, I have produced pieces for clients who have given me a completely free hand. Much of my inspiration comes from the natural environment and the interaction of people with the land. The Orkney Islands off Northern Scotland provide a rich source of stimulation and material with which to work.
