Personal Statement
I established my workshop in 1984 after graduating from the Royal College of Art. Since then I have produced innovative, functional tableware for exhibition and corporate and private commission. I primarily use silver although occasionally I combine it with other metals where appropriate. It is important that through the design process I challenge and stretch my personal concerns, together with previous definitions of the object. Design is an individual's response to a set of criteria. Criteria implies parameters and it is a clear understanding of these that often inspires and initiates a piece. My designs rely on form rather than decoration for impact and are often complex, yet with clean lines exploiting the inherent qualities of silver. The personal priorities that repeat throughout my work are space, line, proportion, balance and the relationship between the object and the surface it sits on. External source material comes indirectly from a broad interest in all things visual but in particular architecture.
