Personal Statement
Maya makes unique precious metal vessels and jewellery. Her current collection includes beautiful hand-made bowls, trays, vases and jewellery all produced using recycled metals. It is important to Maya that the metal she loves to work with isn't adding to the negative effects that mining has on both the environment and local communities involved in its extraction.
Maya's new 'Inclusion Collection' is influenced by the Japanese tradition of Wabi-Sabi. Maya's understanding of Wabi-Sabi is that it is the art of finding beauty in imperfection, profundity in earthiness and revering authenticity above all.
In translating this philosophy into her own work, she finds a new freedom and interaction with the materials and techniques she uses. Melting precious metal becomes reticulation, a fault in a precious gem becomes a rare inclusion and working more intuitively and playfully becomes an opportunity for progression.
Whilst her work has been shown at many prestigious venues across the UK, including museums like the V and A in London and the Sheffield Museum and galleries such as Partridge Fine Arts in London amd the Lakeland Arts Trust in Cumbria, she feels her work is most at home on a window sill or mantel piece.
