Personal Statement

Nicholas’ approach to jewellery design is inspired by his aim to express the “classical ideal”. His designs are the product of a rigorous simplification in his search for the “essential” - the basic form that reveals the key idea. He is always interested in the optical and plastic properties of gemstones, experimenting with cuts that push the boundaries of traditional gem cutting. He usually cuts the stones first and then builds the pieces around them until stone and metal become one. Constants in his work include tourmaline, rare types of garnet, amethyst, jade, opal and rose-cut diamonds set in 22-carat gold and 18-carat white and yellow gold.   It is rare for a jeweller to have both stonecutting and metalwork skills but this approach generates very individual pieces that combine both elements seamlessly. Nicholas’ favourite way of working is by private commission.
