Personal Statement
My early training in book illustration has no doubt influenced my approach to silversmithing. For me, a shiny mirror-like expanse of silver is like a blank page waiting for images, marks, or the play of light on bumps and hollows to bring it to life. For narrative-based pieces, a design is etched in layered relief on a fairly simple form. This works well not only for commemorative pieces like 'Thriplow Farm Harvest' beaker, which depicts elements that affected the sugar beet crop, but also as a means of exploiting pattern for its trompe l'oeil potential as in the 'basketry' tea set. Ephemeral visual effects, like transparency, present some more intriguing subjects for etching as in 'Marsh' beaker's overlapping leaves and see-through base. I am attracted to things that flow, twine and billow. When they are the source of inspiration, asymmetric sculptural forms will often express the notion best, with
chased and hammered curves creating movement in a pieces as in the 'McGuane' vase. Whatever shape the article takes, I prefer a fluid transition from one part to the next with the odd counterpoint if it feels right. Graceful form and an inviting tactile surface make for a thing that satisfies the eye, the hand and the heart.
