Personal Statement
I started making small pieces of silversmithing at school when I was fourteen. The visual arts, in particular drawing and painting, have always been compelling. These absorbing disciplines, especially drawing, are still central to everything I design and make. Whatever the medium, the challenge is always to find a unity of line, form and proportion. Drawing in its broadest sense is the means by which these aims are achieved.
I work almost entirely to commission because I see the practice of designing and making silverware and jewellery as a partnership or joint venture. I try to deliver quality of ideas, design solutions and technical skills. The other side of the matrix is the commissioner, whose input is vital in terms of requirement, usage, cost consideration and, of course, personal likes and dislikes. I much prefer working to, and satisfying, a demanding brief because I want my designs to be owned as well as appreciated.
Within this framework, I attempt to maintain an open experimental approach and keep my personal design development moving. There are no pretentious theories or mysteries behind my work. I aim to design and make silverware and jewellery which has beauty, value and permanence. It is necessary to have understanding and sympathy for silver and gold to make the most of these beautiful and versatile metals. They last for ever and time exposes shallow, self indulgent or frivolous work.
